The Town of North Attleborough celebrated the opening of a new playground at Community Field with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 28, attended by town officials, school representatives and community members, the town announced Oct. 30.

The project replaced playground equipment that had served the community for approximately 25 years and had reached the end of its useful life. The new playground includes updated play structures, improved accessibility and safety surfacing.

The project was funded through $500,000 in town capital funding and $75,000 in state funding secured by state Rep. Adam Scanlon.

For Parks and Recreation Director Steven Carvalho, the project marked a full-circle moment. The original Community Field playground was one of the first projects he worked on when he joined the town 25 years ago, and he has now helped oversee its replacement.

During the ceremony, Town Manager Michael Borg spoke about the value of investing in community gathering spaces. "That's why we build playgrounds. I'll say it plainly: I'll take a playground over a data center any day," Borg said. "A data center may hum along behind a fence, but a playground brings people together. Parents meet neighbors. Grandparents bring the next generation. Kids grow up with memories of a place that belonged to them. That's what makes a town a community."

Community Field serves as a recreational hub for North Attleborough families and visiting communities who travel to town for youth sports and other activities. The new playground will benefit students at Community Elementary School as well as families who visit the field throughout the year.

The project reflected a collaborative effort among the town's Parks and Recreation Department, Town Council, School Committee, school administration and state partners.

Borg closed the ceremony with a message to children who will use the new playground: "So to the kids here today: this is yours. Run hard, climb high, play fair, and have fun."
