Health board enforces new statewide kratom ban

Board of Health · Meeting of September 8, 2026

North Attleborough's Board of Health enforced a new statewide kratom ban and heard pushback on a proposed nicotine-free generation policy. Chairman Jonathan Maslen led the three-member board, which unanimously approved a food service permit for Subway owner Ashish Kumar Patel and tabled a kitchen permit for Harris House Boards. Director AnneMarie Fleming told the board the state's kratom prohibition took effect August 28, after town inspectors found the product being sold at all three local Cumberland Farms stores.

The board read $29,824.44 in payroll and $20,763.63 in expenditures into the record, including $19,453.28 in delayed reimbursement to the Northern Bristol County Public Health Alliance. NA Smoke Shop owner Sakshi Kishin urged the board against a nicotine-free generation policy, warning it would send business to Rhode Island: "When you turn 21, you know what you're doing at that point in life, right?" No vote was taken on the tobacco proposal.
