Town Council rejects rezoning of former Allen Avenue School
Town Council FY26 · Meeting of January 12, 2026
NORTH ATTLEBORO — Town Council rejects commercial rezoning of former school site. The Town Council voted down Measure 2026-011 in a 4-5 tally that fell short of the six-vote supermajority required for zoning changes. The measure sought to rezone 290 Allen Avenue from residential to commercial to prepare the former Allen Avenue School for sale and enhance its marketability through an upcoming Request for Proposals process.
Vice President Keith Lapointe, Councilor John Simmons, and Councilor Dan Donovan opposed the measure on timing and sequencing grounds, citing the absence of an active RFP and the pending Multi-Use Overlay District bylaw. Town Manager Michael Borg and School Superintendent Dr. John Antonucci presented comprehensive budget and financial briefings covering expenses, revenues, workforce capacity, and special education costs.
