Finance Sub-Committee combines school safety funds, clears public safety budgets

NORTH ATTLEBORO — Town Council Finance Sub-Committee advances consolidated school safety funding. The committee voted unanimously to recommend Measure 2026-070 to the full Council, combining two separate Capital Improvement Program measures and $514,190 in previously authorized but unspent funds for doors, security, and hardware upgrades across school buildings. No repairs to the high school will proceed except emergency maintenance.
During concurrent FY27 budget hearings, Police Chief Richard McQuade reported 54 officers on staff, the most in department history, with a mental health clinician position funded through opioid settlement money covering 8-10 years; Fire Chief Christopher Coleman reported 5,600 annual calls, 70 percent EMS-related, and discussed piloting PFAS-free gear for three firefighters at $17,000 via grant funding.
