Council approves backyard chicken zoning amendment

North Attleborough Town Council approved a zoning amendment enabling residents to keep backyard chickens in most residential zones.

Town Council FY26 · Meeting of June 22, 2026

North Attleborough Town Council approved a zoning amendment enabling residents to keep backyard chickens in most residential zones. The council voted unanimously to accept the use-table implementing the previously adopted backyard chicken bylaw, permitting chickens by right in residential districts R10 through R40 under bylaw restrictions. Councilor Daniel Donovan, Bylaw Committee chair, noted the amendment lifts restrictions for R10 and R10S residents and eliminates special permit requirements for R15 and R20 residents.

The council also unanimously approved 14 year-end financial measures, including a $750,000 transfer from Capital Stabilization to other post-employment benefits reserves and $289,000 in combined wastewater funding ($69,000 from emergency reserves and $220,000 from retained earnings) for sludge removal, along with authorization to repurpose capital project funds for HVAC boiler replacements at Community and Amvet Elementary Schools.
