Bylaw panel backs chicken ordinance with eight amendments, sends measure to full Council.

NORTH ATTLEBORO — Bylaw Sub-Committee backs three zoning and ordinance measures. The panel unanimously approved a revised backyard chicken ordinance incorporating eight amendments addressing inspection procedures, setback distances (chicken coops now must be 15 feet from property lines), and enforcement language giving the Health Department discretion on fines from $100 to $300. The measure takes effect July 1, 2026.
The Sub-Committee also continued Measure 2026-046 on Multi-Use Overlay Districts pending Planning Board input on development standards, and unanimously forwarded Measure 2026-058 to the full Council, shifting auto dealerships from outright prohibition to approval by Planning Board special permit in commercial and industrial zones.
